Alice & Alex’s garden wedding: rock, indie & a very good party

A ceremony in the grandparents’ garden, hay bales for seats, pizza and crêpes outside, and a band waiting in the marquee. Alice and Alex’s wedding had all the ingredients for a brilliant party, with the people they loved right at the centre of it.

We joined them in Twinstead for both photography and videography: Sofia on stills, Sam on film, and Harry alongside us as an apprentice photographer. It was a day full of personality, and we wanted the photographs and film to feel just as relaxed and lively as being there.

A garden with a family connection

Getting married in a family garden gives a wedding a very personal starting point. For Alice and Alex, this was their grandparents’ garden: somewhere that already meant something to them, made ready for a celebration with family and friends.

The ceremony took place outdoors, with hay bales for the guests and greenery all around. In the questionnaire Alice sent us beforehand, the plan was a 5.30pm ceremony followed straight away by the evening celebrations. That later start gave the day a lovely, easy flow into the party.

After the vows came the rose petals. Alice had written that guests would throw them as they walked back down the aisle, and the photographs capture the two of them surrounded by a proper shower of confetti. Those just-married smiles are one of our favourite parts of the day.

“Very casual” — exactly as they wanted it

When we asked about the reception, Alice’s answer was simply “very casual”. The garden setup suited that perfectly: outdoor tables, catering vans for pizza, drinks and crêpes, and a marquee ready for the evening.

People could grab something to eat, find their friends and enjoy the space. Even our food arrangements on the questionnaire came with a cheerful instruction to eat pizza or crêpes. It tells you quite a lot about the welcome we received.

We made time for the family photographs and some portraits of the two of them, with the garden providing the backdrop. Alongside those pictures, there was plenty for Sofia to catch as it happened: conversations around the tables, laughter between friends and all the little interactions that make a wedding feel like itself.

A wedding film with a rock and indie feel

Alice and Alex’s music taste leans towards rock and indie. That gave Sam a clear direction for the film, and he searched Musicbed for tracks with a similar feel to the music they love.

The music choices, pacing, colour grading and overall style were all shaped around the atmosphere of their wedding. The quieter moments needed room to breathe; the party needed its energy. We wanted them to recognise the feeling of their day as soon as they pressed play.

Working together on photography and film meant we could follow the same moments in different ways. Sofia’s photographs preserve the expressions and details; Sam’s film brings back the movement, voices and music. Harry joined us to learn and photograph alongside the team.

The helmet camera came too

We also brought the helmet camera. It is every bit as daft as it looks: a camera mounted out in front of whoever is wearing it, right in the middle of the fun. At a wedding with this couple and these guests, it fitted in beautifully.

There was another little extra for Alice and Alex. Through our corporate and commercial work at The Camera Guys, we had been partnering with Jellyshotz, so we gave the couple three complimentary boxes from the Jellyshotz wedding range to enjoy with their guests.

A marquee full of music and good company

With the band playing and everyone gathered in the marquee, the evening carried on in the same spirit as the rest of the wedding. A fun couple, guests who were up for a party, and plenty happening wherever we pointed a camera.

We loved being part of it. Alice and Alex made their wedding feel like them, from the family garden to the music and the food, and that gave us so much to work with in both the photographs and the film.
